Day 9: How to Digest Pressure and Uncertainty.
2022 was supposed to the be the year we would emerge from a worldwide pandemic.
Unfortunately, the world is now even more uncertain. There are pressure points all around the globe. And, the level of uncertainty is at epic levels.
It seems as if we are like Sisyphyus condemned to forever push a rock uphill.
What can we do to digest all this pressure and uncertainty? That is what today’s lesson is all about.
Our goal is to rise up from the burnout, sliding and surviving zones to live as much of our lives as possible in the vitality zone.
The Surviving Zone is when we get most of our tasks and obligations correct. We meet most of our deadlines. We execute on the assignments we are given. We take appropriate care of our kids, our parents, our pets and ourselves—most of the time. This zone, however, is devoid of joy. We are running on empty barely making it to the end of each day. Outwardly, we seem ok. There are no disasters that are occurring. We may do some exercise, sleep ok and eat ok. But, we are not living a vital life.
The Sliding Zone is where we start to slip. We miss deadlines. We fail to complete some assignments. We are no longer taking appropriate care of our kids, parents, pets or ourselves. Our exercise habits, sleep patterns and diets are approaching terrible. This is a zone of serious danger. We can easily slip into the burnout zone.
The Burnout Zone is where we are physically, mentally, social and spiritually exhausted. Our health suffers. Our relationships are combustive. And, we need significant help to crawl out of this zone. Tragically, many of us do not even know we are suffering in the burnout zone. There is a zone below burnout that we must avoid at all costs. That is the zone of impending doom.
So, how to move from any one of these zones to the Vitality Zone?
Step one is to admit we will forever have to deal with pressure and uncertainty. We cannot avoid them. They are and will forever be all around us. One suggestion is to “search for out opportunities to demonstrate calm.” Marine Commander Bill Vivian
